Battle Your Bad Hair Day

Written by: Emily Boland

We’ve all had them- those days where you wake up and your hair is completely un-tamable. You can’t comb through it, and no matter how much you tease it, it always manages to fall flat. Most of the time the only solution is to wash your hair and start all over again.

Here at HauteMess Magazine, we’ve learned how to help battle and tame that wild hair without having to start all over again. Join us in never having a bad hair day again (or at least learning how to deal with them!)

Prep your hair!

One way to avoid bad hair days is to make sure you are properly taking care of your mane. If your hair is dry and brittle your hair is going to be harder to control.

– Use a gentle shampoo that is less likely to dry out your hair. You may need to invest a little bit of money to get a higher-quality product. Avoid sulphates.

Condition your hair starting from the ends working your way up the hair shaft. Try and avoid coating your roots too much, this will just weigh your hair down.

– Use a conditioning hair mask at least once a week.

– Use oils to avoid split ends and dry tips.

– Always, always, always, always (ALWAYS) use a heat protectant when using heated styling tools!

So your hair is still a mess, now what?

– Use a dry shampoo. Even if your hair doesn’t look/feel dirty, dry shampoo will remove any excess oils and give your hair some life and body (HauteMess Tip: If you’re wanting to avoid spending extra money on a new product, baby powder is a great substitute and is a fraction of the price usually!)

– If your hair is curly, comb through the tangles with your fingers and use a curl enhancing serum/cream/lotion to bring those dull, frizzy curls back to life.

– Own it! Own your frizz and put it half up or into a wild and crazy pony. Confidence is key with anything style & beauty related. If you’re not worried about your ‘disaster’ hair, no one else will be either.

Try another style.

– Try changing your part. A simple change can make your hair look totally different- even on a bad hair day.

Tease your hair at the crown of your head to create some faux volume.

– Curl or straighten your hair (assuming it is willing to cooperate.)

– If your hair is oily try slicking it back in a tight pony, use a toothbrush with hairspray to get rid of any fly-aways.

– Opt for a bun! The classic sock bun always looks fantastic and is easy to keep under control.

These are just a few very simple steps in prepping your hair to avoid bad hair days and working with your bad hair days when they come (and trust us, they will come.) Taking care of your hair is very important, remember to get trims regularly and condition, condition, condition- especially in the cooler months.

Disclaimer: Keep in mind that taming methods that work for us, may not always work for you. Everyone is different and we each have a different set of hair on our heads.
